AMOpportunities, the Chicago-based startup that manages clinical training for schools, hospitals, and students globally, accepted the Bronze award for the 2022 Sales Partnerships Ethics in Sales Award from The Stevie Awards and Sales Partnerships. The award was given to companies who have demonstrated best practices and achievements in demonstrating the highest ethical standards in sales since 2020. A panel of judges reviewed each entry to determine winners.

The AMO sales team, referred to as AMO Advisors, has helped more than 3,600 global medical trainees participate in U.S. in-person and virtual clinical experiences. Launched in 2013, the company, who connects global medical schools and U.S. hospitals with students to provide on-the-job clinical training, has grown year over year—in large part due to the dedication and passion from its employees.  

AMO uses the term "Advisor” because the sales team has a dual role: first, learn about a medical trainee’s career goals, and second: recommend programs that further these goals. AMO’s advisor team isn’t directed to make the highest dollar sale at all costs—instead, they make the sale that will result in the best career outcomes for their medical trainees.

“My advisors were always looking forward to answering my questions and taking care of my parents' concerns, and the support team of AMOpportunities helped me with all the documentation I needed to travel safely,” says a past AMO trainee from Colombia. “But overall, they all helped me to get in contact with amazing doctors, who now I admire immensely.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, AMO put together a three-pronged approach to helping their trainees. First, AMO created a COVID-19 policy that allowed trainees to indefinitely postpone their rotations until it was safe to travel. Secondly, AMO launched virtual rotations, which allowed trainees to get the clinical experience they need from the safety of their homes. Thirdly, AMO developed an internal pre-approval system that ensured those trainees who needed rotations that fulfilled their university requirements would be able to find them and receive a 100 percent refundable deposit if these experiences did not align with their curriculum. No other clinical experience provider was able to offer this level of service and deliver an entirely new type of product.

With the impending physician shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 by 2033—predicted by the AAMC—the need for additional doctors is more acute than ever. By expanding clinical training capacity nationwide, AMOpportunities provides a pathway for more medical students, especially international and non-traditional students, to become U.S physicians and practice in our areas of highest need.
